Congratulations David Hines Award Winners

Roland Labana, Saint Monica Preparatory's STEM Academy Dean, was recognized as one of this year's recipients of the David Hines Volunteer of the Year Awards. Our congratulations and gratitude go out to Labana, along with fellow awardees Dan O'Brien and Julie Shavers, SMPREP parents who were also celebrated by our parish for making a difference in the Saint Monica community through their dedication and service. View the video to learn more from Msgr. Torgerson about how all of the awardees have profoundly impacted our community. Labana shares that he is "honored and humbled" by the award since, "every time I give something back, I receive way more in blessings." Shavers shares that the recognition by Msgr. Torgerson and the Saint Monica community, "means the world to me."

"Roland Labana is an integral part of the Upper School Science Department as our Engineering Teacher and STEM Academy Dean. The students are inspired when he shares his real-world experiences and are energized by his passion for the subject. Beyond the classroom, he has served as the St. Monica Parish Council Chair, serves the parish as Director of Men's Cornerstone and in the Hospitality Ministry with his wife Lisa." - James Spellman, Upper School Principal

"Julie Shavers and Dan O'Brien have been active parents in countless ways. She has served on the SMASH committee, has helped to spearhead the school’s parent faith sharing group and has served as a Lower School room parent for numerous years. He has served as a Saint Monica Preparatory Board Member for two years, PTC President for three years (through COVID) and co-chairs the golf committee. Together they have also graciously agreed to emcee SMASH for the past four years and guide us through the most challenging times for this event. We can always turn to Dan and Julie for help with welcoming new families or help with an event. They have three wonderful sons: Ammon, Class of 2024, Ivie, Class of 2026 and Austin, Class of 2029. We are truly blessed to have them a part of the Mariner Family." - Deacon Kevin McCardle, SMPREP President

Catholic Schools Week Highlights

This week, Saint Monica Preparatory celebrated the gift that is Catholic education during the annual, nationwide Catholic Schools Week (CSW) - culminating in an all school Mass. Despite the challenging start to 2025, Msgr. Torgerson encouraged everyone to be grateful to be here together as part of the Mariner community. It was a week full of gratitude and appreciation for the role the parish, community, SMPREP families, the nation, our talented students and of course, our wonderful faculty and staff play in creating the strong foundation provided by Saint Monica Prep.

Mariners Serve & Give Back

Many among our Saint Monica Prep community of families, faculty and staff, school board and alumni have lost homes, businesses and so much more in the devastating wildfires. We continue to pray for our Los Angeles community as it recovers and rebuilds. Mariners have answered the call by helping support families displaced by the wildfires. We are grateful to all of the first responders including our own alum Sam Saldibar ‘14, a firefighter with the LA County Fire Department serving on the frontlines of the Eaton Fire.
