Mariner Sports Highlights - Fall
Congratulations to all of our Mariner student athletes, especially our seniors competing for Saint Monica Prep for the last time. Mariner Football followed last year’s CIF Southern Section division title with another incredible season, finishing with a 7-2 overall record and 4-1 record in the Camino League. Our defending champs fought hard in a double-overtime playoff game vs. Brentwood School, which ended in a loss 32-38. Read more about all of Mariner Football’s 2024 successes in the Santa Monica Daily Press.
Mariner Girls Tennis also made it to postseason play. The squad won its competitive first playoff game in the CIF SS Division 7 first round vs. Ocean View with a final score of 9-9 (tie breaker 82-72). Girls Golf finished its season strong as well with four students making all first team for the league - well done Mariners! Varsity Cheer had an outstanding performance at Local’s Night on the Santa Monica Pier and recently competed for the first time at a USA Regionals competition where they qualified for Nationals.
At the Lower School, records were set at the Fall CYO Golf Tournament where 6th grader Westley H. had a first place finish in the Boys Gold B Division, 7th grader Benjamin A. claimed second place in the Boys Navy A Division, and 5th graders Noah U. and Edoardo D. tied for second place in the Boys Navy B Division. At the first FIYA Cross Country meet of the season, 6th grader Catalina C. came in first place; while at the second meet, 4th grader Daniza B. claimed third for D3 Girls 1 Mile and Catalina claimed third for D2 Girls 2 Miles. For the D2 Boys 2 Miles, 5th grader Jamie B. claimed fourth. Impressive work Mariners! Special shoutout also goes to our 6th Grade Girls Volleyball team coached by alum Shayne McGivern '24 for its undefeated season.

Next April during the National Football League Draft, our eyes will be on Saint Monica alum and Washington State wide receiver Kyle Williams ‘20. Williams honed his football skills here at Saint Monica, leading to a standout prep career. His success at WSU placed him in the program's record books, ranking second in single-season receiving touchdowns and fourth in receiving yards. As he continues to make waves, his future in the professional ranks looks bright with scouts closely following his every move.
This week, Saint Monica Preparatory celebrated the gift that is Catholic education during the annual, nationwide Catholic Schools Week (CSW) - culminating in an all school Mass. Despite the challenging start to 2025, Msgr. Torgerson encouraged everyone to be grateful to be here together as part of the Mariner community. It was a week full of gratitude and appreciation for the role the parish, community, SMPREP families, the nation, our talented students and of course, our wonderful faculty and staff play in creating the strong foundation provided by Saint Monica Prep.
Many among our Saint Monica Prep community of families, faculty and staff, school board and alumni have lost homes, businesses and so much more in the devastating wildfires. We continue to pray for our Los Angeles community as it recovers and rebuilds. Mariners have answered the call by helping support families displaced by the wildfires. We are grateful to all of the first responders including our own alum Sam Saldibar ‘14, a firefighter with the LA County Fire Department serving on the frontlines of the Eaton Fire.
