Mariners are Citizens of the World

Mariners are Citizens of the World

Students in grades 6 through 12 took part in Saint Monica Preparatory’s Wintersession program this year before Spring Break, an experiential learning week that takes SMPREP students out of the classroom and immerses them in activities around Los Angeles, California, the U.S. and the world. The focus is on cultural and service learning, self-discovery, reliance and reflection to enhance what students are learning in the classroom - in the Upper School’s STEM, Humanities and Visual & Performing Arts Academies, and for middle school students, in American History and Government.

SMPREP Upper School students toured Costa Rica and Japan, immersing themselves in the cultures, histories and languages abroad, while 8th graders explored our nation's history over a week spent in Washington, D.C. and New York City. Our 7th graders worked with the Cesar Chavez Foundation in Kern County, and our 6th grade students spent a few days in the Pali Mountains in San Bernardino County. Additional groups of students visited Southern California colleges and all around Los Angeles in a series of day trips from Temescal Canyon to Griffith Park to Newport Coast, from Dodgers Stadium to Dolby Theatre to LACMA, and from Arboretum to Six Flags Magic Mountain. There were also Campus Ministry and other service opportunities to round out the week.

Earlier, during Catholic Schools Week in February, Lower School classes from Transitional Kindergarten through 5th Grade ventured out into the surrounding community to visit and learn more about the fire department, Boys & Girls Club, Santa Monica Public Library, post office and more. It was exciting to watch our students engage with the world around them and make those valuable connections between the classroom and outside world.
