Making learning come to life with PBL

Saint Monica Preparatory's Project-Based Learning Initiative is an immersive educational approach that underscores our dedication to fostering dynamic, hands-on learning experiences. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem or challenge. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication skills. Project Based Learning unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and teachers.

The George Lucas Educational Foundation funded USC researchers to study the benefits of Project Based Learning on student outcomes. Findings from the first year revealed that KIA [Knowledge in Action (KIA) PBL approach] increased the likelihood of earning a score of 3 or higher on the AP U.S. Government or AP Environmental Science test by about 8 percentage points.
