Become your best self

At the Upper school, you are encouraged to take risks, learn from your mistakes and seek truths. With an emphasis on project-based learning woven throughout the college preparatory curriculum, upper school students develop critical thinking skills, compassion for one another, and engaged citizenship.

NAVIGATE your future

Whether you’re ready for Multivariable Calculus as a sophomore, excited about doubling up on AP histories, or keen to explore electives that align with a potential college major, our curriculum supports your individual journey, preparing you for college and beyond with confidence and purpose.

DISTINCTIVE OPPORTUNITIES AND PROGRAMS that inspire you

Academic Pathways

Through a series of Academic Pathways, students may choose a specific area of interest in which they will participate in advanced level coursework and project-based learning experiences over four years. We offer five Academic Pathways: Humanities College Preparatory, Visual and Performing Arts, Honors/Advanced Placement, Athletics Industries and Computer Science/Engineering

Dual Enrollment

In partnership with Santa Monica College, students take college-level courses on SMPREP's campus and earn both college and high school credit.

Science Symposium

All Science students get to participate in the SMPREP Science Symposium at the end of the second semester. The symposium is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning through original research projects and presentations to the community.

SPAs

Summative performance assessments require students to synthesize knowledge and skills and transfer learning to relevant and real-world situations. Performance assessments allow students to demonstrate evidence of learning through active performance. Grading rubrics are designed to effectively rate the performance and measure the skill level.

Travel Learning Opportunities

Acquire a greater understanding of the world through off-campus travel — from exploring such places as Costa Rica and Japan to immersing yourself in service in Nairobi, Kenya. By traveling the world, you will gain a greater understanding of the world and your place in it.

Wintersession

Off-campus trips and hands-on experiences — whether it’s computer coding, knitting or touring Dodger Stadium, the one-week winter program focuses on the joy of learning, exploring new subjects and fostering connections. Wintersession allows members of the community to share their academic, professional and personal passions with others, and to explore and take risks.

An SMPREP education isn’t about fitting into a box; it’s about meaningful, transformative growth. When we bring together students from diverse backgrounds, each with their own unique story, perspectives, strengths and aspirations, and pair them with our passionate educators, experts in their fields who deeply understand how adolescents learn and grow, the outcome is truly remarkable.

-Cindy Torroba '00, Vice Principal of Student Life

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING

SMPREP's Project-Based Learning Initiative is an immersive educational approach that underscores our dedication to fostering dynamic, hands-on learning experiences. Through project-based learning, students engage in interdisciplinary activities that blend subject matter expertise with real-world applications. Our commitment to project-based learning extends across all academic disciplines, empowering students to develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and creativity. Each project is designed to provide opportunities for students to explore, inquire and innovate, ultimately deepening their understanding of core concepts while honing their abilities to communicate effectively, think critically and adapt to diverse challenges. By embracing project-based learning, we ensure that our students are not only academically proficient but also equipped with the practical skills and mindset necessary for success in the ever-evolving global landscape.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

The goal and vision for Experiential Learning at Saint Monica Preparatory is to provide a sense of place and understanding of who we are as citizens of the world as students move through each grade level of the upper school. We believe that having experiential learning and global competencies will prepare our students to live and engage in diverse communities, to thrive in the future of work, to navigate and collaborate globally, and to contribute to a more just and sustainable world. The 9th-12th grade program will focus on answering these questions: “Where am I going?” and “What does it mean to be a citizen of the world?” Students will be offered local, domestic and international opportunities to help answer these questions through Wintersession, course curriculums, exchange programs and summer travel programs sponsored by the school.

MAKERSPACE

The MakerSpace is a collaborative workspace for students and faculty to explore “thinking with one’s hands.” Whether it is kindergarteners using LED circuits to create holiday cards or a college-level Biology class making a prototype of a molecule, students are empowered to show what they know in ways other than written tests or papers. The MakerSpace serves as a resource for project-based learning (PBL). Hands-on tinkering develops innovation, creativity and problem-solving skills.  A student enters with an idea and leaves with a complete project. The space is available by appointment for individuals and for classes; the MakerSpace Innovation Specialist also welcomes drop-ins for consultation on how to use the available tools, techniques, materials, and design-thinking processes to enhance curriculum or to pursue extracurricular projects.
